The mRNA of the gap gene hunchback (hb) is maternally deposited in a uniform distribution throughout the unfertilized egg. However, Bicoid protein activates the transcription of the embryonic hb gene, whereas nanos protein inhibits the translation of hb mRNA. Consequently, Hunchback protein becomes distributed in a gradient that decreases from anterior to posterior.
