The gold standard is the use of the value of gold as a fixed standard on which to base the value of money. It is also a monetary system in which currency is convertible into its legal equivalent in gold or gold coin. The United States adopted the gold standard in 1900 and then abandoned it in 1934. Cf. FEDERAL RESERVE SYSTEM The central bank that sets credit and monetary policy by fixing the reserves to be maintained by depository institutions, determining the discount rate charged by Federal Reserve Banks, and regulating the amount of credit that may be extended on any security. The Federal Reserve System was established by the Federal Reserve Act of 1913. 12 USCA section 221.
Twelve Tables or Twelve Federal Reserve Banks all reside inside a "State". Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Cleveland, Richmond, Atlanta, Chicago, St. Louis, Minneapolis, Kansas City, Dallas, and San Francisco.

At the time of the Domesday Inquest (shortly after the Norman Conquest), about 40% of households were marked as belonging to villeins: they were the most numerous element in the English population.
