VILLEIN - a person entirely subject to a lord or attached to a manor, but free in relation to all others; a serf. At the time of the Domesday Inquest (shortly after the Norman Conquest), about 40% of households were marked as belonging to villeins: they were the most numerous element in the English population. FREEMAN - (bef. 12c) 1. Someone who enjoys all the civil and political rights belonging to the people under a free government. SEE FREE LAW. 2. Someone who is not a slave.
